Analysis of our primary research, questionnaire

I asked a questionnaire to seven students in my class, who are aged between 17 to 19 and I asked the following questions:

1.Have you ever heard of Noah and The Whale?

2.What type of music do you like to listen to?

3.Which do you like better a pop promo with a Narrative or performance?

4.Do you like music with Lyrics or without Lyrics?

5.Would you watch the pop promo of a song even if you didn’t like the song?

From the first question the results were interesting as a lot of people have heard of Noah and the Whale, out of the seven six people have heard of them. This is good in a way because it means that these students have an idea of what type of genre Noah and the whale play, but at the same time it’s bad as these students can compare our pop promo with the original pop promo’s of Noah and the Whale.

There were a various different types of genre for music, but the main types of genres were: Metal, Rock, R&B, Hip Hop, Pop, Trance, and Classical. A lot of these students prefer many different types of genres rather than sticking to one type. There is a joint top of genre of music, which is: Metal, Rock, RnB, and Hip-Hop, pop. This is bad for our group as the genre of music that Noah and the Whale like to perform is indie type music, which the students have not even included in their favorite types of music.

Our group asked this number three because for our pop promo it is just a narrative and we are interested in what people are more interested in performance or narrative. The result of this question came out equal (five each) which is interesting because a lot of the students chosen both. But this is good for our group, as we now know that it is not that important to have any performance and no one will be disappointed.

Our group asked the question four because some people in our class are actually doing a pop promo without any lyrics and our group were wondering what these group of students actually prefer to listen to. This questions goes with what type of music people like to listen to all of those genre’s of music that they choose have lyrics in them normally apart from trance. This is good for our group as we have lyrics in ours also lyrics are good for a pop promo as it gives a narrative which we can follow rather than a pop promo without lyrics because then the pop promo has to go to the beat of the music rather than the lyrics.

The last question we asked because we want to know if any would actually be interested in looking up Noah and the Whale but the results of this showed that people prefer to watch a pop promo if they like the song, people who don’t mind watching a pop promo if they didn’t like the song only said that they would watch the pop promo for research. I think that this is a true point as if you like a song a lot most people want to see how the band have managed to create it on screen.

From our research of this questionnaire I can say that our group is on the right path of knowing how to capture this audience, but at the same time are really down side is that no one in our class enjoys indie, which might put our fellow students off our pop promo.

Own Individual Idea for CD cover & Magazine advert

Cd cover

For my Cd cover of Noah and the Whale – 5 years time, I was going to keep the same idea as the band’s original cover, which is a cartoon form. But instead I was going to have a picture of a whale in the sea and out of the blowhole comes the number 5 then just like the original Cd cover it was going to say in small font under “5” it was going to say “years time”.

Just like the Original Cd cover I was going to have bright colors e.g. Yellow, but instead have a blue skies look with the whale in the sea. I was going to do this as we had some group production meetings in which we thought that the song “blue skies” from the same artist, we were going to use because it was sadder and depression but instead we went back to “5 years time.”

The colour of the number “5” was going to be yellow so that it goes with the blue skies look and it would look good.

Mag advert

I was going to copy the same idea as the album by mika called “ The boy who knew too much” Mika had the same design in the mag advert as the cd cover, the only thing that was different was that the Mag advert had ratings from different magazines and also it showed when it was coming out and what came with it e.g. DvD bonus etc. I would like to do the same thing for my Mag advert because it is easier for people to spot the CD by the cover and the audience might buy it more, as they know what they are expecting. Also I would like to put some rating so for example, “well Done” but I think that it would be a much simpler and stronger message if we just put just 4 or 5 stars, then underneath put the name of the company who is rating but we will make up a random name for instance “ The daily Newspaper.”

Treatment for Editing - by Joshua Panyne

This is our treatment for Editing done by Joshua Payne.

Our narrative consists of two time scales so it will be important to make it clear which scale we are in by possibly using visually arresting cuts such as swipe edits when we switch time scales. Apart from those moments I intend to stick mostly to conventional edits although I may employ a couple of jump cuts during the argument to create an atmosphere of chaotic friction. I may also use a couple of graphic matches during the rapid cuts of the choruses in order to show the breaking symmetry of the periods.

In addition we have also discussed using a super 8 type of visual colour for the flashbacks as it creates a sense of hyper reality as well as harking back to a time in the past. It will also hopefully further distinguish between the different time scales keeping the audience abreast of what is happening in order to avoid confusion. It is also important to point out that editing can play a more significant role in this project than in our film noir project as cuts are often more obvious, numerous and stylised in pop promos. It will also be vitally important to integrate all of our establishing shots to highlight our changing locations as they play a vital role in showing the characters' relationship, i.e the waterfront is when they are calm and relatively happy (the smooth elegance of the boats and water) whereas the park with its wintery and wooded almost gothic atmosphere is better suited for the slightly souring nature of their relationship. Also the tennis court, a place of rivalry and competition, is ideal to show the first glimpses of conflict in their relationship.

Treatment for Cinematography - Chris Kennworthy

This is Chris's Treatment for our pop promo- he did cinematography.

For the first shot, the establishing shot, we had discussed a possible point-of-view shot of the Sun. This is personification of the Sun because we are seeing what the Sun sees, if it had a point of view of our world. So, I took this as a consideration, and as a result I have decided that the first shot could either be a High Angle Shot from the Sun’s point-of-view, or indeed a Low Angle Shot of the Sun, then from the Low Angle the camera tilts down to look at the street, but at the same time elevating the tripod using the Elevate/Depress tripod controls, so that when the street does come into view we see the street as if it is from the Sun’s point-of-view, or that of a CCTV camera (as in the CCTV camera joke video above), but looking to the right of the street.

The second shot is a continuation of the first, so Match-On-Action is increasingly important here. We see the man walking, “wandering aimlessly by the water’s edge” as Josh had put in our Synopsis. I was thinking of maybe a High Angle Shot looking down to the left of the street, the camera on the opposite side of the street this time, and focusing on the man as he walks from the right to the left of the screen, continuing his movements from the first, establishing shot. I was hoping that to cut down on the number of shots we actually use, we could make these two opening shots into one long one, so that we are not worried about the flow of the cuts, but if we do film and edit these as two shots then we must pay particular attention to the “180 degree line rule” and the continuity and flow of the transition between the two shots.

The third shot is of the man as he sits down by the water’s edge and dangles his legs over the edge of the promenade, his legs dangling above the water. We could have a Wide Shot of him as he walks to where he will sit down, the camera panning left to give him some “looking space” in the framing of the shot when he sits down. As he has approached and sat down next to the camera, the shot changes from a Wide Shot to a Medium Shot. Originally I thought we could have only the man in focus (Shallow Focus) then when he crouches to sit down we re-focus the shot so that both the foreground and the background are in focus.

When he sits down, the next shot is of his legs dangled over the edge and his reflection in the water below. Because I wanted to show his legs at the bottom of the frame, I think this shot will be better shot as a handheld shot, and have a focus pull from his legs to his reflection, ready for the next shot of the water where we see him and his girlfriend reflected in the water. She isn’t really there, and the reflection of her is just one of his memories which sets us up for the shot to follow.

To be creative, I thought the next shot of the water could be in the past, still with their reflections in the water, only this time it is a memory, not so much an illusion. I thought we could have the shot of his legs and her legs dangling over the edge, only they are both in different clothing to his present - in summer clothes, and as they get up and leave happily from the spot at which they were sitting, in the next shot (a Long Shot), hand-in-hand, the real man in the present time still sits there, and sees his memory as if he is a ghost in another world, invisible to others but not to us, watching as their relationship together (in his past) progresses to the video’s climax. I reckon we can add this effect to the video in Editing, and only involves superimposing, or overlaying one shot onto another.

We had discussed, as a group and with our lecturer Jon, that we could use the effect on our video called “Super 8mm” which was an old type of camera. I researched this on various websites, and found a video on YouTube which was the best example I could find of this video effect. It comprises handheld footage with the style of watching a reel of negatives produced from, for example, a family holiday in the 1960s, viewed in the 21st Century. We agreed that if we could in fact create this kind of effect for our video on our Editing software
Final Cut Pro (on the Apple Macintosh computers in our Editing suite), as the camera equipment we are using records onto Mini-DV Tapes, then we would use this effect to our advantage on shots where we see the man’s flashbacks and memories on-screen.

Concluding on the fact that our narrative is about a man who now has a sad life, remembering (through the use of flashbacks) the good times he had with his girlfriend, I thought of using mostly Wide Shots or Medium Shots, with a couple of Dutch Tilts here and there where appropriate and maybe a couple of Extreme Close-ups on their hands joined in his flashback. I want to include a shot where we are focused on a metal fence (in the tennis courts?) with them arguing in the background but out of focus, then pulling off a Focus-Pull so that when she leaves him after their argument (in the tennis courts?), we focus on him, alone, and possibly crying (or not).

My Treatment for M-E-S for Noah and the Whale - "5 years time"

Treatment for M-E-S.

Locations

Beginning of the pop promo – Docks, sitting on a bench

New paragraph, middle – is in the park (Christchurch), in the tennis courts

New paragraph, middle – is in the park (Christchurch) but near a hill and a big tree

End – starts in burrow dale road then it goes all of the locations that they were happy together but in a quick sec or so.

In case of any bad weather we have decided to also shoot a bit inside of the happy couple in college sitting down eating lunch and whenever it goes to a flashback we will do something like making them pass a water bottle between the two, then goes to the man drinking it then passes then shows woman drinking it then does it again but this time it is just man drinking it.

Costumes

Beginning of the pop promo – Girl – Normal clothing (jeans, shirt) Man- Normal clothing

(jeans, top)… when he is by himself he can be wearing a different top and jeans and a jacket (he can have his hands in the pocket jackets to make him look more sad)

New paragraph, middle – Girl – Wearing sporty clothing (tracksuit) Man – Wearing sporty cl

othing as well (tracksuit). Whenever man is alone he is wearing the same Jeans and jackets and he normally has his hands in his pockets to make it look like it is colder weather and he is sad.

New paragraph, middle (where the tree is) – Girl- Normal clothing, but different clothing from the beginning of the pop promo (jeans, shirt and thin jacket) Ma

n- Normal clothing (jeans and top and thin coat). Whenever he is alone he is wearing the same clothing of the jeans top and jacket.

End – Girl – Normal clothing (jeans, top and a thicker coat) to show that it is getting colder. Man – Normal clothing (jeans, top and a thick coat).

Whenever the two of them are together their costumes should be lighter, for instance they can be wearing white or brighter colors like blue, to try and resemble summer. And as time goes by they wear darker clothing for instance the man could start with a normal blue shirt then when it goes further down the song it goes to a navy blue colour,

Whenever the man is by himself he can be wearing neutral colors, so a neutral jacket co lour like muddy grass green, and his shirt can be a black same with his jeans, to try and show he is mourning.

Props

Beginning of the pop promo – A bench (when the man is alone) but the bench will already be at the docks

New paragraph, middle – We need a two tennis rackets and at least 3 tennis balls in case we loose any

New paragraph, middle – No props required here apart from the tree which will already be in Christchurch Park,

End – We need a jar that looks like an urn, also we need ashes, which we will get from Josh’s fireplace.

Lighting

Whenever the two are together it will be natural light to make it seem happier.

And whenever the man is by himself we should try and use low-key lighting to make things moodier or we can add more shade to make it look darker.

Synopsis of Noah and the whale - "5 years time"

This pop promo will be about a man remembering good times with his girlfriend. It involves two time scales, one when the couple are both happy together and the other when the relationship is over. This section will have a more melancholic tone. We will then reveal that his girlfriend is actually dead and he has been remembering some of their last moments together, some of which will be of them arguing. The video is about the man overcoming his grief.

We start at the docks for our first location with a high angle shot of the sun. At first we focus on the man wandering about aimlessly by the water’s edge and then sitting down and dangling his legs over the edge. We then cut to the two of them in the same location but at a different time after the man sees her reflection in the water. They seem happy and contented. During the instrumental chorus we cut rapidly between the two time periods to highlight the contrast of feelings.

For the next location we will be at Christchurch Park and we will witness the man making his way through a wooded area with the looming trees adding a hint of gloom in the promo’s tone. He will emerge and find himself looking on at an empty tennis court. We will then cut to the two of them playing in the tennis court beginning to have a slight disagreement. The girl will hit a ball away in anger and it will be picked up by the man in the next time scale. During the instrumental chorus we will once again cut rapidly between the time scales highlighting the contrast.

During the final trumpet section we will see the man lying on an empty road alone. We will then cut to the other time narrative to view the couple having a big argument which culminates in her walking away. Our final shot is of the man lying hopelessly in the road and then the girl appears above him but when he blinks she disappears.

Lyrics to Noah and the Whale- "5 years time"

Lyrics to 5 Years Time :

At the docks by himself sitting down looking at his legs looks sad-first 38secs
Oh well in five years time we could be walking round a zoo – high angle in park establishing to point of view in docks, walking around happy.
With the sun shining down over me and you
And there’ll be love in the bodies of the elephants too
And I’ll put my hands over your eyes, but you’ll peep through

Rapids cuts in-between music between time frames
And there’ll be sun sun sun –them happy in the docks
All over our bodies
And sun sun sun - switching back to him walking alone at the docks
All down our necks
And sun sun sun-happy couple
All over our faces
And sun sun sun- him alone

So what the heck

Cos I’ll be laughing at all your silly little jokes- This is set in the park playing tennis
And we’ll be laughing about how we used to smoke
All those stupid little cigarettes
And drink stupid wine
Cos it’s what we needed to have a good time

And it was fun fun fun
When we were drinking – them happy playing tennis ball bounces then cuts to him alone
It was fun fun fun
When we were drunk - him staring into the tennis court
And it was fun fun fun
When we were laughing -ball bounces back to them laughing playing tennis
It was fun fun fun
Oh it was fun – then him staring into tennis courts but we shoot him through the gate.

Oh well I look at you and say
– Them playing hide and seek near the tree him hiding behind the tree,.
It’s the happiest that I’ve ever been
And I’ll say I no longer feel I have to be James Dean
And she’ll say – Them running down hill happy
Yah well I feel all pretty happy too
And I’m always pretty happy when I’m just kicking back with you

And it’ll be – Them happy playing still running up hill
Love love love
All through our bodies
– cuts when he goes behind tree and turns around and cuts to him alone near the tree
And love love love
All through our minds – happy
And it be Love love love
All over her face
- sad
And Love love love
All over mine
- sad

Although maybe all these moments are just in my head
– him lying in the road remembering times
I’ll be thinking ‘bout them as I’m lying in bed
And all that I believe might never really come true
– she walks across but like a ghost and he sees her but she just vanishes
But in my mind I’m havin’ a pretty good time with you

Oh

Five years time
– Them in the road and they are fighting
I might not know you
Five years time
We might not speak
Oh
In five years time
We might not get along
In five years time
You might just prove me wrong – you see her just vanish.

Oh there’ll be love love love
– during this time is the different places that they were together (Christchurch, docks and the road) of them just being happy
Wherever you go
There’ll be love love love
Wherever you go
There’ll be love love love
Wherever you go
There’ll be love love love- by this bit you see him near the tree in Christchurch and him alone
Wherever you go
There’ll be love love love
Wherever you go
There’ll be love love love
Wherever you go
There’ll be love love love – this bit he scatteres ashes and we get a still shot (?) of the ashes coming out of the jar.

Target auidence and Fan base

I think the target audience for noah the whale would be young adults as this is a genre of Indie Folk but at the same time i would also say that older people for example 45+ because this genre is part of the “folk” genre and maybe this is a new type of genre which is “new folk” instead of “old folk.”

Band and artist Star construction

Noah and the whale use many different ways of promoting themselves by going to festival that are popular for everyone for example, Latitude Festival, and this way they know they will gain some kind of popularity. Also they do make more money by making an album of one song that is already in one of their many previous albums, they do this by knowing what song is most popular in that album and making just another album with that song, also they use the same design so audiences will recognize their previous album in which the popular song was in, this way they make more money. Also they promote themselves by playing at universities in the country for example Leeds university.

Research into Band Marketing & Promotions

They have done mane festivals to promote their image for instance at V festival and galstonbury

First album cover was Peaceful, The world lays me down , with the legend song called “5 years time” originally the cd cover(Peaceful,The world lays me down) is a cartoon drawing, then 5 years time became popular so they used another album of just 5 years time which also is a cartoon drawing
.

The band started out on the London pub scene and up until last year included vocalist Laura Marling in their lineup. they got a good reputation around London which culminated in them being signed on to Cherrytree Records and Vertigo in order to record their debut album, Peaceful the World Lays Me Down.

Analysis of Noah and the whale - love of an orchestra

Analysis of pop promo: Artist and song - Noah and the whale- love of an orchstra

M-E-S in this pop prom is weird as in the beginning as it is field which is fine, but later you are not sure where this man is because it is so dark, but then later it goes to a stage performance which we did not expected, I think the director does this as the orchestra is sometimes dark and quiet but when Noah and the whale start to sing it goes fun and light which is normally their genre.

Normally, in this pop promo mid shots are used to give us, the audience, and the idea of who this man is then it goes to a long shot when it changes a different scene so we know where we are.

Some effects I can see is that in the beginning the woman is shot in Black and white which is a visual effect and also when the table moves and splits in half which is different to their other pop promos.

The orchestra song goes along with the beginning when the man starts singing.

The relationship between music and visuals works as when the man starts to dance he goes in time with the music sometimes.

There is no intertextuality that I can see in this pop promo of Noah and the Whale

This pop promo is two genres which is Orchestra and also Indie folk, because when the man starts to sing it goes back to the Indie folk genre.

There is no performance of the band, but there is a small bit of narrative which is that when the man is looking at the photo of the girl we are not sure who she is or what the girl means to hits man, it is left up to the audience’s imagination.

I don’t think that this pop promo does not promote the band in any way as you do not even see the band in this pop promo neither do you see them performing.

This pop promo is different to the other ones that have gone as it is darker than their other ones, but I still think that the target audience is for young adults because of the genre but it is “Folk” music so I would also say that it could lead to older people (45+) because this is a new generation of “folk” music.

Analysis of Noah and the Whale - 2 bodies and 1 heart

Analysis of Pop promo: Artist and Song - Noah and the Whale - 2 bodies and 1 heart,

This is manly set outside in a park and also in a gym and they were wearing clothing like they are working out so gym clothes and then they use props that are trophies.

During this pop promos the director uses long shots to show what different locations that the band are in, then they use close ups before they are running to show their expressions before they run and they seem happy that they are about to run, also there is a close up of when the shoes are being tied this is also a cutaway to show that later in this pop promo something is going to happen. They also use a mid shot of when the band put their hand of their heart to try emphasis the lyrics more.

Again, in this pop promo just like all the other prop promos that Noah and the Whale have made they have used titles to show the different people in this pop promo, this way I think that audiences even if they do not know who Noah and the Whale it invites them in to try and become a fan of the band.

There are only two relationships I can see between the lyrics and the visuals which are when the chorus the band have their hand over their hearts and then with the shoelaces are tied together it shoes that between the two shoes the shoelaces are the one heart.

The only relationship between the music and the visuals is at the end when the band moves their arms in time with the music, and they even stop their arms when the song stops as well.

I cannot see any use of intertextuality in this pop promo of Noah and the Whale.

In this pop promo other is some genre characteristics, this pop promo music is Indie folk which showed in the medium tone of the lighting in the pop promo also the man’s voice sets the tone of the genre.

There is some performance in this pop promo as the band play their guitar again like in most of their other pop promos, also the is a small narrative as it is saying that the band want to win but they want to win at little games like when they were little.

This pop promo does promote the band as the only people in this video are the band which promotes them more than there other music videos.

The intend audience I would say is for young adults because of the genre but it is “Folk” music so I would also say that it could lead to older people (45+) because this is a new generation of “folk” music.

Analysis of Noah and the whale - Shape of my heart

Analysis of Pop promo: Artist and song - Noah and the Whale,Shape of my heart, Director - James Copeman

There is some interesting use of M-E-S as this takes place in a bar and wrestling place and it has a sign to try and make it look like a Mexican place, even though were they are is a stingy place it still has high key light because of the music and lyrics of the song.

This pop promo uses a lot of wide and long shots because it shows different characters and we need to see what these people look like and also we need to know the different locations that they are in, we need also to show the hero and his cape because it is says “Le Corazon” to show this because of the title of the song. Also we always normally need a long shot because of the way when they fight so we can see how they are fighting.

There are no visuals effects I do not think but there is some titles in different fonts to the different characters to create more emphasis of what kind of monster we are dealing with, then underneath there is a small type font that is the same for every character that makes a funny little joke to make the audience laugh.

To me I do not think that there is no relationship between the lyrics and the visuals in this pop promo.

There is a relationship between the music and the visuals for instance whenever the wrestler attacks someone they hold each in some sought of wrestling embrace that goes in time with the rhythm of the music, for example like with the “wolf man” also when the “Communist” is punches the woman his punches goes in time with the music.

There is some intertexuality in this film it reminds me of Nacho libre because of what the wrestler is wearing that mask and it is the same as the film also where this pop promo (Mexico) it is the same as Nacho libre.

In this pop promo other is some genre characteristics, this pop promo music is Indie folk which showed in the medium tone of the lighting in the pop promo also the man’s voice sets the tone of the genre.

There is a narrative in some sought of way as the wrestler is fighting all of the bad people, also there is some performance as Noah and the Whale are playing there guitars which they do the same in most pop promos which is good as it promotes the band it gives the audience the chance to see their favourite band.

This pop prom does promote the band as you see them playing there guitars, but at the same time this promo is not good as most of the time you do not see the band that much as the narrative is normally about the wrestler.

The intend audience I would say is for young adults because of the genre but it is “Folk” music so I would also say that it could lead to older people (45+) because this is a new generation of “folk” music.

My ideas for a pop promo of Noah and the Whale - 5 years time

This is for the first 0.38 seconds of the pop promo: Beginning, when intro comes showing a couple walking/skipping happy, maybe having it like photos and like you here flash going of, also holding hands at, for instance, and a seaside. Or doing romantic things like eating outside and sharing chips at diner.

This is for 40 seconds of pop promo: Couple walking around the zoo, happy, wide shot, then goes to high angle of them walking down. Then you see them at the zoo he puts his hands over her eyes, then you see a point of view through her eyes and you can just see the man smiling at him.

This is for 55 secs of pop promo: If we have a high key light and the couple sun bathing on the beach holding hands still maybe, wide shot would be used for this. Then it goes to close up of their faces being pinky/red (use of makeup).

This is for 1.11 min of pop promo: Showing the couple in a living room sitting on a coach, on the coffee table there is a bottle of wine and two wine glasses, and ashtrays smoke in the room wide shot, mid shot, man smiling at the woman same with the woman. Then you see them laughing while smoking both of them. They could cross hands and give the wine glasses to each other, while also having their cigarettes in the hands and drinking wine.

This is for 1.25 min of pop promo: This is just showing them just walking/skipping along, holding hands, laughing, wide shot, then maybe them being in a play park on the swings or whatever having fun holding hands. Wide shots.

This is for 1.42 min of pop promo: wide shot first then, Point of view shot through man’s eyes looking at women, both smiling, they are at like alter, fancy clothing,. When it comes “and you say” then goes to point of view through girls eyes.

This is for 2.06 min of pop promo: Eye of god looking down on them in a field holding hands, in a bed of roses or anything red. Then goes to mid shot of them turned around looking at each other. Then the woman gets one of the petals and touches his nose with it then, he does it to then they both get up and run down the field, smiling, long shot when that happens.

This is for 2.11 min of pop promo: Then, it is a dream bubble coming out and then showing a long shot of them in bed asleep like it was a dream. This is a mid shot, Then he wakes up and stares at her and smiles.

This is for 2.36 min of pop promo: When it says 5 years time comes to long shot and then the number 5 in the middle of the screen. Then mid shot of them not facing each other and they are angry at each other.

This is 2.53 min of pop promo: Goes to dream mode and you see them, holding hands, in the past and happy him remembering the past.

This is 3.01 min of pop promo: Goes back to them running in the field, wide shot, then the man sits down under a tree, mid shot, and so does the woman and she lies on his chest and then end of song.

End of song goes to black.

Analysis of a music promotional package

The album I have chosen is Disturbed-Indestructible. As you can see the picture is a monster maybe because of his face you can see that his face is distorted and he looks like the grim reaper because of the hood that he wears. Also there is an explosion in the background of fire and he is on fire like he has just walked out. I think the artist only does this because it goes with the name of the album which is “Indestructible” also it goes with the artist name as it is “Disturbed” and the figure in the album cover looks very disturbed. The font of the alum is the same because the name Disturbed is always the same type font always throughout all of their albums which is obviously their famous typeface. The type face under neither is small and spread out I think the artist did this because they know that people who are likely to buy this are their fans so they know they do not have worry about achieve fans, also another thing is when you look at the picture you maybe think that it is a creature who is indestructible. So they know without a name they probably gain an audience. Also the colours are very dark, the only thing that is light is the fire and even that is shaded fire not florescent for example, also even the type face of the artist is a dull grey.

Here is the magazine advert for this album I think that they have done it a very simple advert of just the band behind some glass that has broken in the middle and under neither just when the album is coming out and what it is called. I think the artist has done this photo because it shows that the band is indestructible and that they can break glass just with their eyes for example. Again they used their brand name type face so their fans no that it is them as you cannot see the photo that well so you don’t know who it is. Yet again when the album comes font is the same as the title of the album so maybe people will recognize it in a store if they have never looked for a Disturbed album. Also the way the font is slightly slanted to make it edgy.

The beginning shows some quotes from very successful emperors for example Julis Ceaser, they are indestructible leaders.

There is some use of M-E-S very different locations such as the jungle, the desert, I think this is a very important location because in the desert it is very hot and it is showing how the man is indestructible. Also they show only locations which you could die in for instance a war field.

The cinematography in this pop promo is mainly just long shots because they have to show different locations, also when it shows the band it is mainly mid shots to show the band playing, also when it is a guitar solo they do a close up of the guitarist playing, this is for the audience because they like to see the different cords he plays, this is good for some audiences because they are learning to play guitar and want to do exactly what he is doing.

There is not much of a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals as the man is mainly saying indestructible a lot of the time and on the screen it is showing different form of being indestructible but different points of view.

There is a relationship between the music and visuals for instance when the guitar solo comes on the visual on the screen is a much slower fighting scene that goes with the music. Also after the solo, when it goes to the war scene it goes precisely on a thump beat and that is when you go to the war scene with mud in slow mo in the air.

To me this is a metal type genre music because of the way it is so dark, and it could be like rock, but sometimes rock uses more low key light. And also normal in rock they do not use lyrics that have to do with being indestructible.

There is sort of a narrative structure, but set in different locations. There is a narrative with the caveman and I think it is that he is trying to get back to his tribe but he runs into other cave men and kills them.

This pop promo promotes the band allot because you see them playing all the time between the clips. Also, at the end the singer becomes indestructible too as he just walks through the explosion. Also, they promote the guitarist with the solo.

There is a use of intertextuality I think, form 10,000bc I have never watched this movie but I know it is about a caveman trying to get back to his tribe and faces obstacles. And they have done the same here; it is again trying to show that he is becoming indestructible by facing the sun as an example.

I think the audience for this would be people aged between 16-25 because it is more of the metal genre; also I think it would be mainly for boys because to me I think that this pop promo is sexist as it is saying only men are indestructible.

Pop Promo Analysis - (Rogue Traders-Voodoo Child)

Artist and Song: Rogue Traders-Voodoo Child, Director: James Ash

The use of M-E-S in this pop promo is very limited, for example there are not many locations on the screen, and the only one I can see is the plant desert location that is all. The use of props is high as they use playing cards, birth certificates for each band member sometimes, and also the whole pop promo is set in a book which is a prop. I think the director does this to give the emphasis that this is a book and these are pages that we are looking at and we have to use are imagination from the words that are in the book.

For cinematography in this video, it is mainly mid shots to show the band members, also they have close ups of a woman’s face when the same words repeat “ Voodoo child” and also there are two long shots of the women but that is to set a location of where she is. Again why I think they use just mid shots is try and show that this is a book and that in the book there are not many locations but more people talking.
To me I think that this whole pop promo is a whole visual effect, because the director is trying to make the artist and even the background are just pages of a book and instead of just words there are pictures so in a way this just an imagination of the words on the pages, this is the reason why most things are black and white such as the people, also if there is colour they are only dull colours, and even when there is one bright colour, (the lips) it turns to a dull grey.

There is some relationship between the lyrics and visuals, they make it quite clear because they have some words in the background which normally are the most important such as “here come the drums” I think they do this to emphasis the chorus more which should normally keep in someone’s mind which they want. Also there is one more relationship between the two which is when she talks about “poison running through me” it runs through a heart and it comes from the lips which normally poison is made. They do this maybe because it is a simpler and more cost effective way of addressing those lyrics.

There is a relationship between the music and visuals for instance, when the beat goes comes the band members on the certificates bang there head in the right beat to the music, also another thing is when the music sounds like a wind the visual turns into a wind of cards and top hats. The director did something like this because maybe that is a good beat to bang your head to and people can join in with the band members banning their heads.

To me, I think this genre is rock and the only clue to why I think that is, is because in the beginning where they show the book it is a dark background and a dull coloured book and normally in rock or metal genre they use hard key lighting to make it darker. Even thought the whole song is light but that is trying to represent the pages of the book.

I think there is no narrative structure in this pop promo but I think that lyrics make the narrative structure.

I think it dies promote the band, by showing all the band members even thought they are not playing any instruments, so there is no point of them actually being on screen but they are still there promoting themselves.

I think that audience for this would be between the ages of twelve to twenty-five because it is rock music and not many people enjoy it also I think that this pop promo is aimed at both girls and boys.

Pop Promo Analysis - (Katy Perry-Hot "n" Cold)

Artist and Song: Katy perry- Hot “n” cold music video, directed by: Alan Ferguson 2008

In this pop promo it shows many different locations, such as a chapel in the very beginning to establish where we are (at a wedding), also after when the man is running down the street it is all alone until he runs in and knocks over a man dressed in a hot dog suit the director has done this so that it shows how desperate the man is to get away from the girl. Also, you see Katy Perry in a nightclub singing and everyone who is dancing to her music is supporting her because they do not let the man go until finally she moves and he goes along with her. Some use of props is that she uses a phone to show that no matter where he tries and hides she is always following her. At the end of this pop promo it goes back to this chapel where we started at the beginning to try and show it never happened and the man was just dreaming it.

A lot of this pop promo is shot in long shots and mid shots, because there are three different locations and therefore three different Katy Perry types so the director uses long shot to set the location for the audience, and he uses mid shots when Katy Perry starts to sing to show her expressions on her face.

There are some visual effects in this pop promo for instance, the light change in the chapel to try and set the type of genre in the pop promo of a type of pop/dance theme.

There are some relationships between the lyrics and visuals for instance, in the beginning when they are in the church Katy Perry uses her hand as if she is talking and that is what she says in her lyrics “you always speak.” Another point is when she is in the chapel and she uses the words “you’re in and you’re out.” The people, such as the groomsmen use the hands as an action also their hands are going as the same time as the beat of the music. Also, when the man uses the phone she also uses another movement of putting her hand as a phone. I think why she uses movements is just to emphasis her lyrics more.

The music and the visuals do go together in this pop promo for instance, in the church everyone goes to the beat of the music when dancing, using little things, like nodding their head when the beat is low but when it beginnings to pick up they start moving more like the groomsmen start moving their whole bodies.

I think that this pop promo is a pop genre i think this because the light in this pop promo is a low key lighting because even though that the narrative is sad the pop genre is normally happy. Also, I would consider this a dance as well because of the lights used in the beginning in the church and it has a disco beat to it.

There is a narrative and it draws the audience by leaving the question open in the beginning because the groom never actually say “Yes” so you wonder if he will change his mind.

This pop promo promotes the artist, Katy Perry, because you see her in three different types of versions.

I think the audience for this pop promo is for people aged eight and up and mainly girls would be watching this but I don’t think boys would be that interested in it, also I think that any would enjoy listening to this music because the genre is pop and alot of people listen to the genre.

Pop Promo Analysis - (Chemical Brothers-Believe)

Artist and Song : Chemical Brothers – Believe, Director: Dom and Nic.

In this pop promo there are only four locations that the director uses which is: Forest’s, Tube Station, Street and the man’s work. The Director uses these type of locations because they are lonely, dark places. This makes the man more insane because there are not many people around and because he is the only one that can see the robots he becomes more worried. But that is only in the beginning when he just starts noticing the robots but at the end he is in a public place (on the street) with a lot of people around so which proves that he has gone completely insane.

When the man is going more and more insane there are extreme closes of his eyes and him sweating to emphasis his worry and frustration as he is the only one who can see the robots. Also when he is running up the stairs there is a point of view shot this gives the audience how scared the man is because he is running and the camera movement is wobbly.

The use of visual effects I can see is at the end when he is sitting on the street the cones of the building change colour and come down towards, also when the robots are coming closer towards him the traffic cones light up as well. The director uses these effects to try and emphasis that he is completely gone insane.

The only thing I can see is when the word “Believe” comes on he sees the robots. I think the director has done this because he is the only one who believes and sees the robots.

When there is a high pitch sound in the music they use things like the locker when he slams it, it goes “bing.” Also whenever the robots come on the screen it makes a sound but it goes along with it as when the robots move the music changes, this is trying to emphasise that the robots are actually like animals and that they have their own noise, like a cat says “meow.”

There are no genre characteristics this is a genre of electronica and I cannot see anything that makes it an electronic genre.

There is a narrative in this pop promo, and i think it keeps the audience wondering why the man is seeing the robots. Also the narrative keeps the audience wondering if he will ever be caught by the robots and also what do the robots want with them if they actually caught him.

This pop promo does not promote the band performance because you never see the band, but that is because it is electronica music and it would be boring for the audience to see some men tuning some electronic equipment boxes.

For me, I think that the intended audience are teenagers because of the music as well I do not think that older audiences like 25 + would listen to electronica music.

Forms and Conventions of Pop Promos

· Andrew Goodwin identifies a number of key features, which distinguish the music video as a form:

1. There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.
2. There is a relationship between the music and the visuals.
3. Particular music genres may have their own music video style and iconography.
4. There is a demand on the part of the record company for lots of close ups pf the main artist.
5. The artist may develop their own star iconography, in and out of their videos, which, over time, becomes part if their star image.
6. There is likely to be reference to voyeurism, particularly in the treatment of women.
7. There are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts.

· Lyrics – Key lines may play apart in the visual associated with the song but very rarely will a music video simply illustrate the lyrics wholesale.

· Genre – These features might be reflected in types of mise en scene, themes, performance, camera and editing styles.

· Camerawork – Camera movement, angle and shot distance all need to be analysed. Camera movement may accompany movement of performers but it may also be used to create a more dynamic feel to stage performance, for instance. By constantly circling the band as they perform on stage.

· Editing – This might take the form of split-screens, colourisation and the use of blockbuster film-style CGI special effects.

History of Pop Promos

· The close relationship between music tracks and visual material can be traced back to 50 years earlier with the experiments of Oscar Fischinger in Germany in the 1920s and in the USA in the 1930s notably with his abstract synchronisations, or visual interpretation, such as the Disney film Fantasia (1939).

· Short films made to showcase the artist emerged in the relatively early days of sound filmmaking. Films of up to eight minutes in duration were used to display the singers from Billie Holiday to Bing Crosby, some showings were in cinema screenings as part of a full programme of newsreel, cartoon and main feature but mainly as reels on the forerunner of the video jukebox, the Panarom.

· Television coverage of pop music attempted to capture the new teenage audience from American Bandstand in the USA in the 1950s through Ready Steady Go and Top of the Pops in the mid-1960s in the UK.

Brief for Pop Promo

During this year I have to produce a promotional Package for an album, which includes a pop promo for an album track, with two of the three options:
· A website homepage for the band
· A cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD Package)
· A magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD Package).

For making a pop promo we have to work in groups no larger than four people and each person in the group must explore different roles involved in the production. This pop promo will need to promote the image of the band and reflect the genre, pace and mood of the songs. Also we need to consider what of sort of institution the pop promo would sit within and the TV channels/Website could be distributed on. Also we have to consider the look and feel of the whole package (pop promo, website, A cover for its release as part of a digipak CD/DVD Package, A magazine advertisement for the digipak.
